Whilst I was writing my dissertation, coffee was pretty much the only pleasure I allowed myself for a period of like 3 months, my only distraction from tedium. Nowadays, it always feels like a guilty pleasure because I'm pretty sure I could get through the day without it, but then I'd have to deal with the afternoon slump. I guess that's where it becomes clear that coffee is often about performance - why the hell not take a break or have a nap in the middle of the day, if that's what your body rhythm is telling you?Marekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07832884172645361380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-567551886916883231.post-33120135913257990172010-08-10T16:04:58.831-04:002010-08-10T16:04:58.831-04:00Folks, sorry I'm so late getting back over her...Folks, sorry I'm so late getting back over here. I only just realized I hadn't visited this thread. I'm glad you all have enjoyed the series. I'm in the process of rounding up the questions that have been posted so perhaps I can create some sort of follow-up.

So @Vellum: It was in part a question of why do I need to force myself to work right now by drinking a large cup of coffee that propelled me to investigate this stuff, but I can look in caffeine, stress, and irritability.

@Gene and @Gregory: Interesting suggestions about caffeine in the pill format. Thanks for putting that thought into my head.

@Sara & @Becky: Thanks so much for sharing your stories! I really like reading about what coffee means to folks.

@Mocha: Eight cups! I thought I was getting out of hand with two ;)

And @Bonn: Thanks so much for stopping by. I prefer to keep it on the lower end. I don't get jittery like some people do, but if I become over caffeinated I tend to get drowsy and then crash in the early evening.

I usually get a double espresso shot to jump start in the morning. I remember thinking that it was a very adult thing to do and being proud that I was so mature. Now I enjoy it for its caffeinating properties as well as the taste, warmth and familiarity of it.Beckyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04476141710499689669noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-567551886916883231.post-46315850494019951042010-08-04T15:04:22.856-04:002010-08-04T15:04:22.856-04:00Krystal- Great articles! I would head over to my local 24 hour diner and get my school work done over a few cups of coffee. I would be so tired each morning that I needed a cup or two to move! Now, I start my day with a cup before breakfast and another after my oatmeal or granola bar. But nothing after 2pm otherwise insomnia strikes. I've had periods of time where I had to quit coffee because of an ulcer (and when I was pregnant.) But I love the taste of it and I always find my way back to my morning cup. We have some local roasters near PSU, I find their blends are so much more robust and interesting than the general store brands. I usually use either soda or No-Doz, because I don't like the taste of coffee. One thing I've noticed is that people get creeped out when I say I take No-Doz. It's just caffeine, and one tablet is the equivalent dose to two cups of coffee, but something about it being in pill form rather than in a beverage makes it seem more drug-like. Most of my friends experience caffeine use as a mixture of productivity and recreation.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12994384030576854788noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-567551886916883231.post-92230664405546052082010-08-04T09:44:53.542-04:002010-08-04T09:44:53.542-04:00You can get a pound of pure caffeine for $34. I still have a lot of trouble functioning before about 11am without any caffeine though, so I let myself have one cup, which I tend to start when I get up and which I nurse in an insulated travel mug over the course of the morning. Did you uncover anything about caffeine, stress, and irritability in your travels? (Or was it simply the fact of my forcing myself to be productive against my own better judgement that was the cause?) :)Vellumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14141550387013181309noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-567551886916883231.post-47833776023537622282010-08-04T09:20:23.451-04:002010-08-04T09:20:23.451-04:00Thanks, George. I've switched back to tea myself. In theory, it should do the same thing.
